- Wizards of the Coast has launched D&D Universes Beyond, a product line that will feature official D&D tie-ins based on popular entertainment brands.
- The program officially kicks off with the newly confirmed World of Warcraft gameplay expansion, arriving later this year for the D&D 5.5E rules.

- Wizards says it is intentionally balancing Universes Beyond releases against D&D products for established settings, with no fixed number of crossovers planned per year.
At this year’s Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast officially introduced D&D Universes Beyond, a new banner for officially licensed RPG crossover content. The reveal came hot on the heels of the newly unveiled D&D World of Warcraft gameplay expansion, which Wizards of the Coast confirmed is the first release to carry the Universes Beyond label.
The news, however, isn’t entirely surprising given that the D&D team has been hinting about this approach for some time, including releasing a recent D&D Vampire the Masquerade supplement and announcing an open role for a second-party publishing lead. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has also previously stated that D&D crossovers were in the works.
Notably, Universes Beyond is also a popular sub-brand for Magic: The Gathering, which has featured crossover card sets for pop culture franchises such as Final Fantasy, Lord of the Rings, Fallout and Marvel, generating several billion dollars worth of revenue for Wizards of the Coast in the process.
Below, we look at everything we know so far about the D&D Universes Beyond initiative and what it means for the future of the game.

What is D&D Universes Beyond?
D&D Universes Beyond is a new publishing line from Wizards of the Coast that will consist of Dungeons & Dragons products using third-party IPs from film, television and video games.
In a private press conference held prior to Gen Con, D&D Creative Leader Laura Hohman described the initiative as an “opportunity to bring incredible hand-picked collaborations to our world of collaborative storytelling. With Universes Beyond, D&D will provide more ways to play in more worlds for more fans everywhere. These collaborations are authentic love letters to fans and beloved franchises… It’s made by fans for fans.”

What brands will be featured in D&D Universes Beyond?
Universes Beyond officially kicks off with the newly confirmed D&D World of Warcraft gameplay expansion, arriving later this year. Wizards says the goal for every Universes Beyond release is that it should “feel authentically” like the source material, rather than trying to shoehorn in mechanics or lore.
No other franchises beyond World of Warcraft have been confirmed, but Hasbro has inked a number of recent licensing deals that include specific mention of RPG products for brands including Harry Potter and K-Pop Demon Hunters. They also have a larger license in place for the popular Fourth Wing book series, which would seem ideal for a potential D&D product.

Why is Wizards of the Coast launching D&D Universes Beyond?
The simple answer appears to be financial. Universes Beyond for Magic: The Gathering was initially launched in 2021 and since that time has generated close to $2 billion in revenue, by many estimates. This includes making over $200 million in a single day following the launch of the Final Fantasy card series.
And while D&D fans haven’t exactly been clamoring for these kinds of crossover products, Wizards of the Coast clearly sees a potential financial benefit in this type of approach. The big question, however, is whether this approach will resonate with new and existing D&D fans in the same way it has with Magic: The Gathering players.

Will D&D Universes Beyond tie in to Magic: The Gathering?
During the closed-door pre-Gen Con press conference, the Wizards of the Coast team was asked directly whether the previous Magic: The Gathering x D&D collaborations would continue under the Universes Beyond banner. Wizards said it’s “definitely open to continuing that collaboration in the future,” citing the strong world-building coming out of the Magic team.
So it’s possible that we may see more crossovers between Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, and that shared Universes Beyond franchises could potentially feature in both games. For example, a Harry Potter launch that includes both a D&D setting book and new MTG card set (although Wizards of the Coast has not confirmed if this approach is in the works).

Final Thoughts
It’s clear Wizards of the Coast is trying to walk a careful line here, leaning into major licensed crossovers like World of Warcraft without turning D&D’s release calendar entirely over to outside IP. In fact, during the pre-Gen Con press conference, Wizards of the Coast was explicit that it does not want Universes Beyond to overtake its original settings, pointing to this year’s slate which includes original content like Dark Sun and Greyhawk as well as their new D&D Icons initiative.
According to Wizards, there is no fixed target number of Universes Beyond releases per year. Instead, the team is aiming to make sure there’s “something for everyone” across each release season rather than leaning entirely into crossover content. Whether that balance holds up once Universes Beyond launches, however, remains to be seen.
